The twentieth century

- J.H Almgren and two of his brothers were in the beginning of the twentieth century out night fishing between Vattviken and Hoverbergsudden when they spotted an object the size of a boat and dark reddish brown in colour that soundlessly swam past them in the direction towards Hammarudden. The animal or the phenomenon weren’t further away that it showed in the lights of the lantern. They particularly noticed the brown colour which at first made them think that it was another boat coming towards them. In that way they all especially noticed this phenomenon. As soon as they noticed that no man could be seen or no oars could be seen or heard they looked at each other wondering. After a brief negotiation they all agreed to as soon as possible head back home. They keep this incident a secret for a long time but were convinced it was Storsjöodjuret they had seen that night.

This were not the first time The Great Lake Monster been seen by the people of Vattviken. In 1840:s Jon Olofsson saw The Monster swimming very quickly from the west part of Hammarudden towards Hackås. Back then it were called the evil spirit of the water – Näcken. That name was also used to scare children and keep them from going to the lake.

This story are collected from Bergvind, published by Bergs hembygdsförening, Östersund 1926 G.F Berntsson & sons Tr.

1936, In September

The creature was sighted in Vigge for an hour.
The creature moved slowly and like a snake. Several humps were visible. The abdomen was shining as if of silver. The creature was the length of a log.

1949, Fifth of June

The taxi aviator Hans Borgsen were landing his seaplane on Brunfloviken when he discovered an animal swimming in an intercept course of the plane. It looked like, according to Borgsen and his female passenger, an overgrown fish with a strange shape. The animal were about three meters of length with three humps over the water surface . When the plane descended to about 100 meters altitude over the surface the animal disappeared down into the depths.

1956, Nine of August

At about 7,30 am Gustav Jansson,Viola Olsson and Erik Olsson were down at the shore of Hölåsen in Hallen. Suddenly Erik sighted something he first thought to be a submerged log of timber shooting out of the water. It was an animal that rapidly swam of in the direction of Trappsnäs. The water splashed around the animal as if it had some sort of rotating propeller. After a short distance the animal slowed down and the six metres long animal floated on the water as if it were sunbathing, it soon started to swim in the same high speed. At first the witnesses regarded it to be a ”big black round lump but later it looked more like a log”. After ten minutes it disappeared in a north east direction of the lake.

1976 was a year with many observations

1976, Twelve of June

They saw something between Hovermo and Mjäla at a distance of about 300 meters. Kenneth Andersson describes a odd looking head with some sort of ”antennas”, a gray hump and how the water were the animal dived down for at least 15-20 minutes after bubbled heavily. The other witnesses confirmed his statement.

1976, Nine of July

At night Rolf Larsson and Irene Magnusson were going by motorboat between Funäs and Hackås, when a big unexplainable wave came rolling 60 meters from the boat. After some more waves a ”up side down boat around one meter long and a couple of decimetres high over the surface”. The animal started to circle around the boat. They got so frightened they went towards land as fast as they could. The animal followed them at the same speed. When the boat stopped a short distance from the shore Rolf and Irene could see the animal for five or six minutes as they made their way towards Hackås. The swells reminded them of waves after a storm. ”I was so scared that my entire body shook. And after what I’ve seen I will never be on the lake alone no more”.

1976, Nine of August

On the afternoon around 2,30 pm Anders Nordin and his brothers and sisters Britt-Marie, Irma, Krister Jonsson and Lennart Jonsson saw how The Great Lake Monster stopped close to the shore outside Vattviken. ”It started to bob up and down in the water” according to the witnesses. They also saw from a distance of about 300 metres how there were foam around the animal and big waves started to roll into the shore.
Irma Jonsson described the animal as a brownish black back of what to her mostly looked like a fish. It ”increased the pace, bent the back until it looked like a hump and disappeared down into the depths of the lake”.

Whitsunday 1979, told to Ulla Oscarsson at the Nattugglan 1990

The incident occurred north of Verkön and were seen by Ulla Björkman and Torsten Dixelius. It was calm and beautiful weather. First a mooing sound or snorting sound was heard. It was a big animal with black humps. The creature rose up the head and turned backwards. The animal tumbled in the water. No boat were to be seen.
